We are facing a serious issue in Anderson County.
If you’ve been following the news, it’s likely you’ve heard that Greenpointe, LLC, a Greenville-based construction firm, is proposing to build a privately owned landfill off Hamlin Road, a mile north of its intersection with Old Greenville Highway/S.C. 88 in the Powdersville community.
I am working with my fellow members of the Anderson County Legislative Delegation to defeat the Hamlin Road Landfill. We are so committed to this issue because of the possible environmental and economic problems associated with this landfill location. The landfill would be used for construction, demolition, and land-clearing debris. Such items contain possible contaminants ranging from mercury to asbestos. Environmental experts have said that the proposed landfill location is porous and water could seep into the water table. This could affect our water supply and the larger bodies of water in the Upstate. In addition, the landfill is dangerously close to residential areas of our district.
To prevent landfill construction, I have introduced a bill in the House H.4762, which calls for a statewide moratorium on landfill applications. Senator Kevin Bryant has introduced a companion bill S.1173 in the Senate. In addition, I have also introduced House H.4890, which calls for an operable fire hydrant must be located within two hundred feet of the entrance to a construction, demolition, and land-clearing debris landfill.
To be successful in this endeavor, we need you help. You can contact John M. McCain at DHEC to express your opposition to this project. His email address is mccainjm@dhec.sc.gov and his phone number is 803.896.4067.
This is such an important issue that I have added a special section on my website to keep you updated on the latest news and information. I encourage you to bookmark it and visit often as we fight this battle.
We must stand our ground on this vitally important issue. Thank you for standing with me to protect the people of Anderson County.
Sincerely,
Dan
